El tren eléctrico expreso Kodama es un tren de lujo construido en 1958-59. Está formado por doce coches todos ellos con aire acondicionado y compartimentos restaurante. Realiza el recorrido entre Tokyo, Osaka y Kobe en la línea principal Tokaido. Tiene una corriente directa de 1500 V. y una velocidad máxima de 120 Km./h, siendo la máxima permitida de 160 km./h.
